Setting the Mood

We want to make something with our own hands, cut a small path of our own and create a product that we could be proud of. We are committed to transparency to our customers, that our candles and other products are made with locally sourced beeswax. Our fragrance and essential oils are sourced from a company, while not as local as we would like, takes their products seriously and makes them as ethically and cleanly as they can. All of the oils we use are safe for skin and clean to burn. There are NO Phthalates, carcinogens, mutagens, toxins, or other unsafe substances in our waxes or oils. There are fragrance free options for candles and lip balms for anyone with allergies or sensitivities.

Historically beeswax was reserved for the wealthy and influential, since it was harder to come by. It was used primarily for religious rites, filling churches and castles, and the homes of those wealthy enough to afford it. These days beeswax is easier to come by, but most candles you can buy are paraffin or soy wax. This is understandable as they’re cheaper options that are easier to work with on an industrial scale. However, paraffin wax is made from petroleum by-products and can release a petrol smell, soot, and toxins into the air when burned. This can lower your air quality or agitate those with olfactory or breathing sensitivities. While Soy candles are better than Paraffin for scent throw and air quality, they tend to contribute to mass deforestation. Although soy wax and coconut wax are wonderful to work with, we decided we needed to be as ethical and eco-friendly as possible for the sake of our product and the people buying them. Beeswax cleans your air and eliminates odors. We feel supporting local apiaries helps support local ecosystems and local small businesses. We want to put something better into the world, to bring a small bit of comfort or joy into someone’s life without compromising the peace of mind that comes with a safe, quality product that you can trust.

The name Wicks and Woodbine was created with nostalgic intent. Honeysuckle, or woodbine as it was referred to in Middle English, is one of our strongest olfactory triggers. As soon as we smell honeysuckle, we’re back home as children, everything smells green and sweet and the air is warm from the Pennsylvanian spring sun. It makes us smile and remember the moments we tried to pull the stigma from the bottom of the bloom in one piece so that we could get that drop of nectar. Successes, failures, moments of peace and fun and innocence. That is what we’re trying to bring to you. Moments to step away from the present, whatever it may have for you, to take you to a moment meant just for you, for your mind to find a place of rest or joy. We hope you find something you love

From the Earth,

for the mind and soul

Every ingredient is considered when being added to our products. All of our wax is pure, high quality yellow beeswax, bought from a local small family business. Our fragrance and essential oils are sourced from suppliers that care about how clean, clean safe, and sustainable they are. Everything sold is clean to burn and safe to apply to skin. Everything is free of carcinogens, phthalates, and mutagens. Every candle, lip balm, and solid perfume is hand poured in small batches with care because we want every customer to have a beautiful experience when they take our candles home.

Bloom

Since our candles are made out of pure beeswax, sometimes a white powdery substance, called ‘bloom’ shows up along the outside of the candle. This is completely normal, safe, and easily taken care of. If beeswax candles are left to sit for extended periods, especially in colder rooms, some of the softer oils will rise to the surface and the wax will take on a whiteish, almost frosted look. Don’t worry, it doesn’t affect the burn of the candles at all, and it’s a simple fix. Just use a blow dryer or a soft, lint-free cloth to remove the bloom.

All Natural

There’s no additives or stabilizers in our wax because pure beeswax does not have an expiration date, and candles made from beeswax can be burned centuries later! The only thing we add is fragrance oils, or nothing at all if you order a pure beeswax candle.

Beeswax

Our wax is pure, high quality yellow beeswax. We’ve taken time to look for local vendors or apiaries we could trust. We believe in buying locally and as ethically as we can. Beeswax is known for being the oldest kind of natural wax used in historical record. It burns cleaner, longer, and brighter than most other waxes. Beeswax has a high melting point so you get more burn for your buck, and its natural yellow hues are a simply gorgeous addition.
